Godeval Cepas Vellas 2015

Bodegas Godeval

Godeval’s 2014 old vines (80-year-old) Godello is a rare opportunity to taste a once near extinct Galician grape variety saved by this revitalised ancient estate. A great wine and a great story.

The Godeval winery was established in 1987 from the ruins of a 12th century monastery, and the owners have not only revived the ancient buildings but a long forgotten ancient white wine producing grape variety too, namely the Godello grape (a native grape rare outside of Valdeorras) that once predominated on the area’s slate soils.

Godello was brought to the edge of extinction when small farmers abandoned their farms for the cities during hard times, but two government employees, Horacio Fernandez and José Luis Bartolome, decided to try to save the local vineyards by producing small quantities of wine from experimental plantings. This eventually led to Godeval, and has since led to other producers championing this variety.

Tasting Note

Delicate aromas of apple and pear with hints of white flowers. Lovely and soft on the palate, round and fruity with good length.

Critical Acclaim

The entry level is called simply 2014 Godello and is sourced from vines averaging 28 years of age planted on slate soils. The hand harvested grapes fermented at 18 degrees Celsius in stainless steel with neutral yeasts, and was bottled without seeing any oak. The nose is very clean and fresh, with aromas of white flowers and fruit, with hints of elegance and complexity. The palate follows the same path towards balance and elegance with clean, fresh flavors and good acidity. This represent the winery's biggest volume with some 120,000 bottles and it's also a very good value.
